Ever wondered what it’s like to be a dog groomer? Let me take you through a typical day in my life as a mobile dog groomer!

Morning Routine 🌅

My day starts early, usually around 7:00 AM. I begin by checking my schedule for the day, ensuring all appointments are confirmed. I also prepare my grooming van, making sure all my tools are sanitized and ready to go. This includes mixing shampoos and conditioners, checking my grooming kits, and ensuring my van is stocked with all the essentials.

First Appointment 🐾

My first appointment is usually around 8:00 AM. I drive to my client’s home, where I meet the dog and their owner. Each dog is unique, so I take a few minutes to understand their temperament and any specific grooming needs. This helps me tailor my approach to ensure the dog is comfortable and relaxed.

Grooming Process ✂️

The grooming process involves several steps:

  1. Prework: I typically start with nail clipping and shaving paw pads. Then I move onto the trimming up the sanitary area and pre-clip they body. Before step 2, I make sure to pluck or trim the ear hair if needed. All depending on that dog’s specific needs.
  2. Bathing: With a thorough bath using high-quality shampoos and conditioners suited to the dog’s coat type. I also place cotton in the ears during the bath. This is also when the anal glands are expressed (for those who need this service).
  3. Drying: After the bath, I start by towel drying then move on to using a high-velocity dryer to remove excess water and fluff up the coat. Some dogs require the cotton balls to be replaced with dry ones, and happy hoodies are available for those who are sound sensitive.
  4. Brushing and Tangles I carefully brush out any tangles and mats that were caused by the bathing and drying, which can be a delicate process depending on the dog’s coat.
  5. Trimming and Styling: Using clippers and scissors, I trim the coat to the desired length and style. This can range from a simple trim to more intricate breed-specific cuts.
  6. Nail Clipping and Ear Cleaning: I go back over the dog’s nails with a grinder to ensure that they will not experience nail cracking. Then I move onto cleaning their ears to ensure overall hygiene.
  7. Back to the owners: The next step is to return the pooch back to the owner, book following grooming appointments and cash out.
  8. Clean up: The last step is to vacuum up any loose fur, and then to spray sanitize surfaces.

Break 🌞

I take a short break in between clients to grab a quick lunch and check any messages or calls from clients. This is also a good time to restock my van if needed.

On to the next Appointments 🐶

The second part of my day is filled with more grooming appointments. Each session is unique, as I encounter different breeds and personalities. Some dogs are playful and energetic, while others might be a bit nervous. It’s important to adapt to each dog’s needs to make the grooming experience as pleasant as possible.

Evening Wrap-Up 🌇

By the end of the day, I return home and clean my grooming tools and van, preparing for the next day. I also take some time to update my records and follow up with any clients if needed.

Being a dog groomer is a rewarding job that allows me to work with wonderful pets and their owners. It’s a busy day, but seeing the happy, clean pups makes it all worth it! 🐕✨
