Double-coated breeds like Golden Retrievers, Huskies, and German Shepherds have a two-layered coat: a dense undercoat and a protective topcoat. This natural insulation doesn’t just keep them warm in winter—it also helps regulate their body temperature in the heat by allowing airflow close to the skin and shielding them from sunburn.
Shaving these dogs can actually do more harm than good. It can interfere with their ability to cool down, expose their sensitive skin to UV rays, and even lead to patchy or damaged regrowth. Instead, regular brushing to remove loose undercoat and prevent matting is the safest way to help them stay cool and comfortable.
