What Groomers Can (and Can’t) Say: Understanding Our Role in Your Pet’s Care

As groomers, we spend a lot of time with your pets — hands on, up close, and often more frequently than your veterinarian sees them. Because of that, we’re often the first to notice changes in skin, coat, nails, behavior, or overall comfort. It’s natural for pet parents to ask questions, and we’re always happy to share what we see.

But there’s an important line we must respect:
Groomers cannot legally give medical advice.

Why Groomers Can’t Give Medical Advice

Even though we work closely with animals, we are not licensed veterinarians. That means we cannot:

  • Diagnose medical conditions
  • Prescribe treatments or medications
  • Tell you what a lump, rash, or symptom “is”
  • Recommend medical procedures
  • Replace veterinary care

These rules exist to protect your pet’s health. Medical decisions should always be made by a trained, licensed professional who can examine your dog thoroughly and run proper tests when needed.

What We Can Do

While we can’t diagnose or treat medical issues, we can still support you by sharing:

👀 What We Notice

If we see redness, irritation, dryness, matting, lumps, hotspots, or anything unusual, we’ll let you know right away.

💬 Our Experiences

We can talk about what we’ve seen in other dogs, what products have worked well for certain coat types, or what grooming habits help prevent issues.

🐾 Our Opinions

We can offer general thoughts on coat care, brushing routines, nail maintenance, and grooming frequency — all based on our hands‑on experience.

📣 When It’s Time to See a Vet

If something looks concerning, we can absolutely recommend that you contact your veterinarian for a proper evaluation.

We’re Part of Your Pet’s Care Team — Just in a Different Way

Think of groomers as the eyes and hands that notice changes early, and veterinarians as the experts who diagnose and treat. When we work together, your pet gets the best possible care.

We’re always here to support you, share what we see, and help guide you toward the right resources — while staying within the boundaries that keep your pet safe and healthy.
