Bella is a Mini Doodle, and she is the kind of dog that makes me smile the second I open the van door. She is small, soft, and full of opinions about how the appointment should go. Some days she walks in ready. Some days she walks in and lets me know, clearly, that she has decided this is not the day. Both versions are fine. That is what the relationship part of the work is for.
When Bella first started coming to the van, the dryer was a whole thing. The tub was a whole thing. The clippers were a whole thing. She had a lot of feelings, and most of them were about the sound of the high-velocity dryer running on its higher settings.
Now, after a few appointments, the dryer is more of a moderate thing. She does not love it, but she tolerates it, especially when I keep the air moving and the volume down. The tub is still her least favorite part, but we have a routine for that too. We go slow. We let her settle. We work in short sections, and we stop when she needs a break. That pace is what got her here, and that pace is what keeps her progressing.
This is something I wish more Doodle owners heard early. Grooming is a learned skill for the dog. Your puppy is not born knowing how to stand on a table. They are not born loving the sound of dryers or the feel of clippers. They learn it, one appointment at a time, with a groomer who is willing to meet them where they are. The first few visits are the foundation. They get easier, but only if the owner and the groomer both put in the work.
A Few Things I Keep in Mind with Bella
Mini Doodle coats go through stages. A few notes I track for her specifically:
- Her coat is a mix of textures and it changes as she grows. The soft, fluffy puppy coat does not behave the same way as her adult coat.
- She needs brushing at home between grooms. A slicker brush and a metal comb get the job done in about five minutes if it is done on a regular schedule.
- Her ears hold moisture. I clean them at the end of the bath and make sure they are dry before she goes home.
- Her feet collect matting between the pads. If the hair is knotted or tangled, I shave it down to the skin to get the mats out cleanly. If it is clean, I give it a light trim. Owners who want a specific approach need to tell me in advance, because by default I work on whatever the foot needs that day.
The Home Brushing Matters
The single biggest predictor of how a Doodle appointment goes is the home brushing. When the owner is brushing two or three times a week, the appointment is easy. The coat is manageable, the dog is comfortable, and we get to spend the time on the haircut instead of on working out tangles. When the coat has been skipped for a month, the first part of the appointment is mat work, and the rest is making the dog comfortable again. Both happen, but the easier version is the one I prefer, and so does the dog.

What Bella Reminds Me
Bella is the dog I think about when a new Doodle owner feels guilty that their puppy is not loving the grooming yet. The puppy is not broken. The puppy is learning. The first few appointments are the foundation. They get easier, but only if the owner and the groomer both put in the work.
Bella is putting in the work. She shows up. She tolerates the dryer. She lets me finish the groom. By the next appointment she is going to be even further along. That is the whole arc, and it is one of the better parts of the job.
