The old story says dogs see the world like an old black-and-white movie. That one is wrong, and the truth is more useful.

They See Color, Just Not Our Color
Dogs are dichromatic. They have two types of color receptor cones; we have three. Their two cones peak in the blue and the yellow-green ranges.
The practical result: blue and yellow read clearly. Red and green collapse toward each other into shades of brown and gray. That bright red toy on green grass really is hard for your dog to pick out, which is why color choice for toys is worth more thought than it usually gets.
Built for Motion, Not Detail
Dogs’ retinas carry far more motion-sensitive rods than ours. That is how they catch a squirrel twitching a block away, and why they still see reasonably well in dim light.
Their eyes are also set wider on the head than ours, which gives them a broader field of view at the cost of fine detail. Their visual acuity is several times worse than ours. They read movement and shape, not sharp edges.
Behind the retina sits the tapetum lucidum, a reflective layer that bounces light back through for a second pass. It sharpens night vision considerably. It is also why their eyes glow in a flash photo.
What This Means in My Van
Hands move fast. Yours do too, and you probably do not notice it.
Because a dog’s visual system is tuned to sudden movement, a quick hand can startle a dog who never saw it coming. Moving slowly and predictably is not me being overly cautious. It is me speaking their language, and it is a big part of why nervous dogs settle with me faster than their owners expect.
Next time your dog seems unbothered by a fast gesture you made, watch their head. They saw it. They just processed it differently. 👀🌎
