What a Sanitary Trim Is and Why It Matters

Nobody books an appointment for a sanitary trim. It shows up on the list, people see it, and they are not sure what they agreed to. So let me explain it, because it is one of the most genuinely useful things in a groom.

What It Covers

A sanitary trim is the clipping of the coat around the rear end, the groin, and the lower belly, plus the areas where urine and feces contact the coat. That is the whole definition. It is not a style. It is hygiene.

Sometimes you will see it called a hygiene clip or a potty patch. Same thing.

Why It Matters

Because coat in those places collects things.

Feces and urine in the coat means a dog is sitting in bacteria all day. That leads to skin irritation, infection, and a smell that a bath will not fix because the source is still there. It also means fecal matter is being tracked into your house and onto your furniture.

For a dog with a long or dense coat, this is not a small issue. It is a daily comfort problem.

Who Needs One

Any long-coated or heavily coated dog, as a baseline part of every groom.

It matters even more for dogs who have trouble keeping themselves clean. A dog with limited mobility, a dog carrying extra weight, or a dog who cannot comfortably reach to groom themselves will benefit enormously. So will any dog with a sensitive stomach or a loose stool, even temporarily.

And any dog in a diaper, for obvious reasons.

Why I Do Not Skip It

Because I have seen what happens when it is skipped for months. The coat mats into the groin and around the rear, the skin underneath gets raw, and by the time it is noticed the only option is a much bigger clip than the dog needed.

A sanitary trim takes a few minutes. Fixing months of neglect in that area does not.

It Does Not Have to Look Weird

A good sanitary trim should blend into the rest of the groom. If your dog comes back looking like they have a bald patch, that is a trim that was done badly, not a trim that was done properly.

Ask for it every time. It is not optional in my van. 🐾
