The Maltese Glow-Up:

Mastering Everyday Brushing for a Flawless Silk Coat

With their halo of pure white hair and soulful dark eyes, the Maltese is the picture of elegance. But if you’ve ever run your fingers through their long, silk coat only to snag a painful mat, you know that maintaining that flawless look is a commitment.

Unlike most dogs, Maltese have single coats with no undercoat. Their hair is extremely fine and can quickly twist into tight knots, especially in high-friction areas. Daily brushing is absolutely non-negotiable to prevent matting, distribute natural oils, and keep that brilliant white hair free of dirt and debris. Here is how to achieve the Maltese “glow-up” every single day.

Your Maltese Grooming Toolkit

To properly brush a Maltese, you cannot use standard pet store brushes. You need tools designed to be gentle on very fine hair and skin.

  • 1.Tool Selection:Choose Gentle Tools First.
  • Put away the long-pin slicker brushes and standard combs. Your everyday grooming arsenal should include:
  • Extra-Soft Small Slicker Brush: Choose one with very flexible, soft pins that are set densely to gently capture the fine Maltese hair without scratching the skin.
  • Finishing Comb (like a Small Greyhound or Poodle Comb): Look for a comb with both coarse and fine teeth that is small enough to handle.
  • High-Quality Detangling Spray or Leave-In Conditioner: This is your non-negotiable step.
  • 2.The Detangling Spray Rule:
  • Never brush a Maltese dry! Brushing dry, fine hair causes static, which instantly attracts dirt, and leads to severe breakage and split ends. Always mist the section you are about to brush with your detangling or leave-in conditioning spray. This provides “slip” and protects the hair shaft.
  • 3.Methodical Line Brushing:
  • You must use the methodical line brushing technique. Run the gentle slicker brush from the root (skin level) to the tip in a downward motion, section by section. Do not drag the brush in long strokes; use a small pat-and-pull motion.
  • 4.The Comb is Your ‘Truth Teller’:
  • After you have meticulously brushed a section with the soft slicker, always follow up with the fine-tooth end of your comb. Run it from the skin out to the tip. If the comb glides smoothly, you have fully cleared the coat. If it catches, do not rip! Put the comb down, mist the spot again, and re-brush the mat with your soft slicker brush.

Focus on the “Friction Zones”

Matting in a Maltese most frequently begins in a few predictable high-friction spots that must be line-brushed and combed with precision every single day:

  • Behind and Under the Ears: Friction from movement and scratching quickly creates tight knots here.
  • The Armpits: The fine hair readily rubs together, forming tight mats against the chest.
  • Under the Collar or Harness: Always remove your dog’s collar or harness while brushing. Constant rubbing causes severe tangling around the neck.
  • The Paws and Between the Toes: This fine hair easily picks up sticky materials and dirt.
  • The Base of the Tail: Frequent friction can cause dense mats to form at the spine level.

Daily dedication to this routine ensures your Maltese remains perfectly coiffed, comfortable, and mat-free, showcasing the silk coat they were bred for.
